Banking Site

It's always bothered me how dated banking sites are. Their mobile apps seem to take all the focus when designing a smoothly function user experience (which makes sense) but when it come to their desktop counterparts they really only seem to put effort into the main splash page looking pretty but neglect to make the actually functionality user friendly.

Home Page

It's not a ground breaking home page but it has everything you need when you're starting your online banking experience. I looked at the sites for popular banking sites such as CIBC, RBC, TD, and Scotia Bank. I looked at which attributes I liked and which I didn't to make this home page.

Log-in is front and center and all the features you'd need to access are easily found.

I also noticed not many banks using green and instead favouring blues and reds for their main colour so I went with earthy tones to help invoke a calm and welcoming feeling. Green has been synonymous with envy and greed but I feel that pairing it with brown changes the context of it.

Home Page (continued)

Customer service is a vital part of any company and it seems every company tries their absolute best to hide customer service access and make it ludicrously frustrating to find and use. Banking is an aspect of our life that shouldn't be frustrating so I made the customer service access as easy as possible. Additionally, the banks mobile app is advertised to help inform users of another way to conveniently use their bank.

Accounts Page

This is one of the main components I wanted to change about online banking. I find it to be a bit shocking how out of date desktop banking sites are, especially considering that in my mind the main demographic of desktop banking would be older users. Because of this I wanted information to be displayed clearly for easy readability. The accounts are clearly listed and actions you can take are clearly shown. Clicking on a specific account would show a transaction history along with the same account actions shown here. My main goal for this flow was transferring money so this is a feature I will come back to.

The spending report breakdown also has interactive pie charts for a clear insight into the users spending so they can be informed of their habits and how they could change if needed.

Account Transfer

This was another main focus I had for online banking. This is another part of banking sites that has been dated and in need of an update. Again the focus was on making things readable and usable for older users. This is why simple text fields and drop downs are used, nothing fancy, just conventional and standard so that older users who have a basic understanding of technology can understand what they're looking at and doing. To help with this I added a visual representation of the transfer for users to confirm their action. I used a dark red paired with a bright green to ensure that the message gets conveyed to colourblind users of any type.

Mobile App

For the mobile version I removed the home page, users accessing their bank from their phone need to quickly see the most important information. The account transfer page has a more modern take on the text fields as a result of the mobile demographic being younger than that of the desktop userbase.
